Governments are increasingly deploying secure infrastructure over the Internet (PKI) and migrating their services (voting, tax declarations, document applications and so on) to the virtual world in a bid to improve their citizens’ satisfaction by automating procedures, reducing transaction times and removing physical barriers to services.

This transition also necessarily requires a dependable method of identifying individuals accessing these services such as via multi-application national ID cards.
