There are many assumptions being made around the potential use of biometrics within the retail environment. Perhaps, because the technology exists, we are inclined to think that it must naturally be applied to just about every scenario. However, we should be careful that, in taking this approach, we do not simply over-complicate things and end up adding significant additional cost and inconvenience for users, without realizing any benefit from doing so. In this context, it might be useful to take a step or two backwards and ask some pertinent questions about our retail operations.
