Nedap accesses Java Card

Monday, 11 January, 2010 (Age: 241 days)

Nedap Security Management is one of the first players on the security market to adapt its access control system AEOS for the use of Java Card technology.

Now that an increasing amount of parties is worried about the application of Mifare Classic technology in access badges, companies are forced to look at alternatives. One of the new technologies that emerges is the Java Card. Although this is a fairly unknown technology in the world of access control, it offers good security. Nedap Security Management has taken the lead in applying this technology, by adapting its access control system AEOS for the use of access badges based on Java Card.

Contrary to Mifare Classic the Java Card has a processor on the card, instead of a memory with reading and writing functionality. One of the reasons Nedap has chosen this solution, is because of the cryptographic methods that are supported and the fact that it allows for several applications to be used simultaneously. Nedap believes that in certain specific situations Java Card can be a good addition to the existing technologies and can expand functionality of the applications.
