Retail Solutions

A solution that fits

by Ann De Vries, Impinj

A look at how a leading fashion retailer is using UHF RFID not only across a broad scope of business processes spanning the distribution center to the retail floor, but also to enhance the customer’s shopping experience

Completing a stock check in big stores is always one of the more onerous tasks of the retail business, but it is fundamental for managers to have a more global insight into their stock than simply counting items as they are sold. With the advent of RFID tagging technology and its increasing use in stores as a means of inventory management, one could simply be content with the fact that there exists a more automated means to the same end. However, great ideas often provide return beyond their original intent, and RFID is presenting stores with a host of other benefits.

Leading retail outlet Metro Group set out to examine the value of ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID across a broad scope of business processes spanning the distribution center to the retail floor. Their aims included greater supply chain visibility, real-time inventory management and strategic data mining. Equally important, Metro also sought to create a better shopping experience for their customers. To achieve these goals, they approached Impinj to provide technology for an end-to-end UHF, EPC global standards-based solution, which would operate from the warehouse to the point-of-sale, all integrated into their enterprise-level systems.
